Homework: Answer Questions on Mr. Blake's Blog

How does advertising influence consumption?
  • the advertising makes people wanna buy the products. It only shows the good sides of the products so that people will use them and not knowing the bad sides of it.
Do you think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits? If not, how can we become more informed about sustainability issues?
  • I don't think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits. The government should tell us about that by advertising. We would be just interested at those ads. Or they could talks about it on newspaper. There are many different ways to do it.
Do you think these advertising techniques influence what you and your friends purchase?
  •  Yes, because we want to buy what we like, so these advertising techniques make us like those products and then we spend money on their products.

MY IMMIGRATION TALE

I was only four when my parents immigrated to England. I don’t remember much about that trip but according my mom’s story, I was very excited when we got onto the airplane. We had to move because, at that time, Vietnam was a very poor country. My mom and dad weren’t having many opportunities and they didn’t get very well paid, they wanted us to have a better future in that country. We packed up and flew to London; my brother was only a few months old when we immigrated, my mom said he was crying a lot, that people around us couldn’t sleep for the whole flight. I was very excited when the flight started, but I didn’t even say a word after we landed, I was very tired. When we arrived, my dad’s relatives were there to pick us up and we were staying at their house for a few weeks before my dad could find a house for us.
It was a hard time for my family; we were relocated to a whole new country different from our homeland, the environment was part of the many differences. English speakers everywhere, my parents said sometimes they found themselves spinning when we first settled in England, because they didn’t know a lot of the English language. As time went on, both of my parents found very high salaries, they had much more opportunities and money than they would in VN. My brother and I had the opportunities to attend at the good schools in England, they’re much better than Vietnamese schools. Moving to England gave us more chances but we also lost something much more than that. My brother and I couldn’t read or write in Vietnamese, we didn’t know the biggest holidays in Vietnam, like New Year, or Tet, and the Mid-Autumn Festival. When my dad finally sees that, he wanted us to move back to our homeland, he said the significance thing of a person is to know and understand his/her own origin country. Therefore, here we are in Vietnam for three years already and now we can read and write Vietnamese fluently. I can also speak English pretty fluently, because of my years in England; it will give me more opportunities in the future.

Map Final Assessment

In the normal world, vampires drink human to survive, but at Jessica’s Kingdom, there is no human to drink blood from. Instead, they drink blood from animals, and their favorite is dragon’s blood. That’s where the problem started.
The country of the vampires called NAHN NAV; it was divided into five parts, north, south, east, west and central.  The vampires don’t live in cities; they live in forests and some mountains, but not as high as the dragons. They have a system of confusing tunnels, if you don’t be careful; you might get lost and will never find your way out. They use those tunnels to send messages faster and safer. But only the vampires know the way out in those tunnels. The dragons are not normal, they’re as smart as the vampires, and they can read minds. The vampires thought that dragons are stupid like animals, but it’s not true, they’re just as smart.
Vampire is a powerful specie.  They’re super fast and strong, their eyes can see in the dark because sometimes they go hunting at night. Vampires are shining under the sun, so their prey can see them easier and run away that’s why they don’t usually go hunting at day. Dragons are also powerful; they live on the highest mountains, that way, the vampires can’t climb up and hunt them at night while they’re sleeping. They can fly hundreds of miles in an hour without getting tired with their gigantic wings. But that was hundreds of years ago; now things began to change, started at year 2510.
At Jessica’s Kingdom, it rain for the whole year, not like rain for half year only. But in 2510, there was no rain at all for the whole year, well little rain, not enough the kingdom’s animal to survive. Lots of animals died in that year, it lead to vampires died a lot because vampires need animal’s blood to survive but there wasn’t any animal so they died. The dragons are exceptions, they can survive months without any food but they need water. Some of the dragons died, not as much as the other species. Year 2512, the dragons took that advantage by invaded the east part of NAHN NAV. There were some vampires live in the far east of the kingdom, alone by themselves in those ranges of mountains. Until the dragons invaded and killed all the vampires, the survived ones ran down toward the west, across the river.
By 2515, the vampires recovered their lost people and they started to build the army to take back their land. In 2516, the war started. The vampires were too strong for the dragons. The dragons got pushed out of the country little by little every day for four years. And the last dragons were kicked out of the country in 2520. A few years later, the vampires created an operation called “kill dragons”, and for 25 years, the vampires killed all the dragons they saw. By 2550, there were only two dragons left, one female and one male. Together, they flied away from Jessica’s Kingdom, and because they were away, so I don’t know what happened to them. The vampires celebrated their victory for one month. And they continued to live in peace.
For many decades, Jessica’s Kingdom was at peace once. But, one faithful day, those dragons came back with their army of dragons. And they started the war with the vampires. Now the vampires no longer want to fight because they felt regret for what they’ve done in the past. They wanted to live in peace with the dragons but the dragons didn’t want it. So another war started. They kept fighting with each other until 3000AD. They both very tired, so they stopped fighting and started to live in peace until now.

A MESSAGE FROM MOTHER NATURE Article

The main idea of this article is about global warming and its effects. It also talks about the causes and damages of global warming around the world. The article shows theories and proves of scientists around the world.

Vocabulary:
  • Torrential - swift, violent stream of something, especially of water
  • Reluctant - unwilling
  • Vulnerable - that can be wounded or injured
  • Skeptic - one who habitually questions matters generally accepted

Weather is what happen in one day, one month, or one year. Climate is weather that has a pattern in a long period of time like decades, centuries.

The flood in Pakistan, record-breaking heat wave and record-breaking drought in Russia and the U.S. In the U.S, wet areas will get wetter while dry areas get drier. Wildfires in Russia.

I have never had any experiences with "extreme weather"

Perception - the quality of being aware of things through the physical senses, especially sight

I think that those disasters can be view as climate change, because throughout our history, mother nature had never been this harsh with us. Many records had been broke, like record-breaking heat wave and drought. Many disasters have occur more frequently.

Family Tree Presentations

After listen to all of my classmates’ presentations, I think that although all of us are the same, studying at AIS, we all have different backgrounds, histories, families and cultures, that’s make us really different from each others. At first when I was thinking about how I would present my family tree, I couldn’t think of many different ways to present it. But when I listen and watch my classmates present, I think their ways are very cool, creative and they had lots of information about their family trees. I learned lots of things that I didn’t know about my friends through their presentations.
I also noticed that in some of Vietnamese holidays, we all do the same things, like have a meal with our family members and visits each other. But we also have little differences, each family do it different ways.
When I was talking to my dad about our history, I realized that there are some parts of our family history my dad doesn’t know. I needed to talk to my grandma, but I couldn’t because her house is really far away. Before that I thought talking to my grandma about our history would be a waste of time, but I was wrong, I should have spent more time talking to her, I could understand more. Through my family history, I also know more about Vietnam history, which I didn’t have a chance to learn more because I’m studying at AIS. I think it’s a great chance for us to know more about each others in a different way.

My Mom's Hometown

My mom comes from a province near Ho Chi Minh City, and she lived in a country side region of that province, so every summer or Vietnamese New Year, or Tet, I get to go out for a relaxing trip to my grandparents' house. The community my grandparents live is small like a village in a city, but not as big as HCMC, surrounded by trees and fields, apart from busy and noisy city. It's pretty close the border of Vietnam and Cambodia, about 20km. And to get to my grandparent's house, you have to through a red dirt road and if you watch closely at the trees on the roads, they're also red instead of green, because of the dirt.
When my mom was little, the people at that area and my grandparents are mostly farmers, they grew crops and raised pigs, their children, my mom and my uncles, also have to farm, they were still going to school, but now, all of my uncles are living in HCMC, included my mom, they're no longer farming. My grandparents also don't farm anymore, they only grow fruits in their little garden around the house. And people around there doesn't have any cleaning service like in HCMC, so whenever they have any garbage they just throw it around the house, and from a few days to a week, they'll burn it up.

Myself

Well, there's a lot about me that you don't know and I don't know where to start. But I'll just write down what's in my mind right now. First of all, I like your class, well also every other classes. I enjoy learning and going to school, because I think there are so much interesting things that I don't know so I always try my best to listen in class and always ask questions. But sometimes I don't like answering questions because i can't and i just don't feel like answering questions.
